Meet Merlot, a tiny 1½-year-old Chihuahua who is still discovering that her world can be a safe and happy place. ❤️
Merlot came to Chihuahua Rescue Truckee Meadows with several other pups after they were surrendered to Plumas Animal Services. We brought them into our rescue in July, and since then, Merlot has been working on something very important — learning to trust people.
She’s making progress, but Merlot isn’t quite ready to meet the public yet.
And that’s okay. 🐾
We’re not going to rush her.
Merlot enjoys the company of other small dogs under approximately 10 pounds, and her canine friends can help her feel more comfortable. As she becomes increasingly secure, we’re beginning to see more of the little dog underneath the uncertainty — playful, silly and capable of enjoying affection once she trusts you.
For now, Merlot is a work in progress, and she gets to decide when she’s ready for that next step.

Because Merlot is such a tiny dog, when she is ready for adoption, she will need a home with no children or grandchildren under 14 years of age. This is strictly for her physical safety — accidents happen, and a dog this small can be seriously injured unintentionally.

Right now, her job isn’t to find a home.
Her job is to feel safe, build confidence, learn to trust and simply be a dog.
When Merlot tells us she’s ready, we’ll listen. Then we can begin looking for the special person willing to give this little girl the patience and security she needs to truly blossom. 🌸❤️
